Emergency services including paramedics and multiple police have responded to an incident in Melbourne's city centre with authorities confirming that one person has been taken to hospital.

Witnesses have told the ABC there was a car driving erratically down Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street, with police remaining at the scene.

A spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to the incident just before 11am.

They said one person was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The chaos unfolded very close to the Melbourne marathon event, where thousands of people were running a route that passed by Flinders Street Station at the Swanston Street end.

Elizabeth Street is open but a large police presence remains in the area.
