Genetic rift in Australia's brolgas is putting southern population at risk

In short: 

Brolgas are listed as endangered in Victoria as drying wetlands put their homes under threat. 

A new study has found genetic variation among Victorian brolgas has declined and become distinct from northern populations. 

What's next? 

Wetland restoration projects across south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia have shown promising signs for the species.
